Aftercare Guide for Korean Beauty Procedures
Proper aftercare is the difference between good results and great results. Korean dermatologists emphasise post-treatment care as much as the procedures themselves, and for good reason — how you care for your skin in the days and weeks following treatment directly impacts the outcome. This guide covers aftercare essentials for the most common Korean beauty procedures.
Universal Aftercare Rules
Regardless of the specific procedure, these rules apply to virtually all Korean skin treatments:
- Sun protection is non-negotiable. Apply SPF50+ sunscreen every morning and reapply every 2 hours during sun exposure. Post-treatment skin is significantly more vulnerable to UV damage, which can cause hyperpigmentation and undo treatment benefits.
- Avoid active ingredients. Stop using retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums, and any exfoliating products for at least 3 to 7 days after treatment (longer for aggressive procedures). Your dermatologist will advise when to reintroduce them.
- Keep skin hydrated. Use gentle, fragrance-free moisturisers and avoid products with alcohol, essential oils, or other potential irritants.
- Do not pick, scratch, or rub. If skin is peeling or flaking, let it shed naturally. Interfering with the healing process risks scarring and infection.
- Avoid heat. Skip saunas, hot baths, intense exercise, and direct sunlight for 24 to 72 hours depending on treatment intensity.
After Laser Treatments
Laser toning (no downtime lasers): The gentlest laser treatments require minimal aftercare. Mild redness resolves within hours. Apply a soothing cream and sunscreen. You can resume your normal skincare routine the next day, excluding active ingredients for 2 to 3 days.
Pico laser for pigmentation: Treated spots may darken temporarily — this is normal and expected. The darkened pigment will gradually flake off over 5 to 10 days. Do not pick at these areas. Use a gentle cleanser, centella-based soothing cream, and diligent sunscreen application. Avoid makeup on treated areas for 24 hours.
Fractional CO2 laser: This requires the most intensive aftercare. Expect redness, swelling, and a grid-like pattern on the skin for 3 to 5 days. Oozing and crusting are normal for the first 48 hours. Keep the area clean with gentle cleansing and apply the prescribed healing ointment or cream. Avoid makeup for 5 to 7 days. Full healing takes 7 to 14 days, with redness potentially lasting several weeks.
Essential: Your Korean dermatologist will typically provide a post-treatment care kit including specific products for your procedure. Use these rather than your regular products — they are chosen to support healing without irritation.
After Injectable Treatments
Botox and Skin Botox: Avoid lying flat for 4 hours after treatment. Do not massage or rub the treated area for 24 hours — this can cause the product to migrate. Avoid intense exercise, alcohol, and heat exposure for 24 hours. Results develop over 3 to 14 days.
Fillers: Mild swelling and bruising are normal and resolve within 3 to 7 days. Apply cold compresses (not ice directly) for 10 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling. Avoid dental work and facial massage for 2 weeks. Sleep with your head elevated for the first 2 nights.
Rejuran: Expect small bumps at injection sites — these are normal and flatten within 24 to 48 hours. Mild redness resolves within a day. Keep skin hydrated and avoid makeup for 12 to 24 hours. You can resume gentle skincare the next day.
After Chemical Peels
The aftercare depends on peel depth. Superficial peels (aqua peel, mild glycolic) require minimal aftercare — just moisturise and apply sunscreen. Medium-depth peels cause visible peeling for 3 to 5 days. Keep skin hydrated with a bland, gentle moisturiser. Do not peel or pull at flaking skin. Avoid makeup until peeling completes.
Deep peels are less common in Korean dermatology but require 7 to 14 days of intensive care including prescription healing ointments, strict sun avoidance, and multiple follow-up visits.
After Surgical Procedures
Surgical aftercare is more involved and specific to the procedure. Your surgeon will provide detailed instructions, but general principles include:
- Keep the surgical site clean and dry. Follow wound care instructions precisely.
- Take prescribed medications on schedule — antibiotics to prevent infection, pain management, and anti-swelling medications.
- Attend all follow-up appointments. Stitch removal (typically day 5 to 7) and progress checks are essential.
- Sleep elevated to reduce swelling — at least 30 degrees for the first week.
- Avoid alcohol, smoking, and blood-thinning supplements (including fish oil and vitamin E) for at least 2 weeks.
- Plan for adequate recovery time before returning to work or flying home.
Building a Post-Treatment Skincare Kit
Korean dermatologists recommend keeping a dedicated post-treatment skincare kit ready. The essentials include a gentle, low-pH cleanser, a centella asiatica or madecassoside-based soothing cream, a rich barrier-repair moisturiser, and a physical (mineral) sunscreen for sensitive post-treatment skin. Avoid products with fragrance, essential oils, or alcohol during recovery.

When to Contact Your Clinic
Post-treatment discomfort is normal, but certain symptoms require immediate medical attention. Contact your clinic if you experience severe or worsening pain that is not controlled by prescribed medication, signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, pus, fever), unusual swelling or bruising that worsens after the first 48 hours, numbness or loss of sensation that persists beyond expected timelines, or any reaction that feels abnormal compared to what your doctor described.
If you have already returned home, contact your Korean clinic via their international patient line or email. They can advise whether you need local medical attention or a return visit.
